...but any excuse to mention the Blazing Saddles campfire beans scene cannot be missed...
Public health experts say sugar is not main health concern with large portions of beans... |
Sadlers Ale and Smoke Haus, in London Road, Southampton is also known as Sadlers Brewhouse and Barbecue depending on which sign you believe (top and below)...and is a triumph of modern architecture - kind of Kwik Fit tyre garage meets garden fence.
Sadlers - a craft, beer, ale, smoke, barbecue, brew, house, haus sort of place... |
Martin and I had actually planned to eat in Weatherspoons Giddy Bridge, but it was full of the massed ranks of Saints supporters fortifying themselves for the prospect of another less than saintly Saturday afternoon performance at St Mary’s Stadium (Southampton 0 - Stoke City 0).
Sadlers was the nearest alternative with spare tables, though it was still quite busy with Saints fans and other customers.
This is a brewery pub, one of three owned by Sadlers (including their brewery tap). Sadlers was an old brewer in the West Midlands up until the 1920s when it closed. The current brewery is owned by the original brewer’s descendants and was started in 2007.
Wood floors, high chairs, and keg mega-fonts... |
Despite it’s nod to tex-mex bar-grill styling, it also had some decoration which was totally ‘off the wall’ - but on the wall...
Proper books - not fake bookcase wallpaper here... |
..the book wallpaper really was complete books stuck on the wall (except where somebody had torn a page out) ...and there were all kinds, from Haynes manuals...
How to change a gearbox... |
...to Nick’s guide to a top class swing...
Nick - swinging...with a ball..? |
Before I got really sidetracked by some educational reading it was time for a beer. Naturally at the bar it was Sadler’s own beer line up...
Some of the Sadler’s beer range..Peaky Blinder also available... |
The Australian beardy bar man came over to serve us, a nice guy, but he looked somewhat distracted - possibly by the TV across the other side of the pub - I couldn’t be sure. I asked for a half of IPA and he promptly pulled me a pint, but as I had to pace myself, he kindly offered to decant off a half when he realised his mistake.
The slightly ‘distracted' service continued as we ordered some food - and, somewhat doubtful that we would actually receive the correct food order, we found a spare table...
Red IPA and beardy bar man... |
The Red IPA was good with a nice roasted, rye flavour. Martin tried the Sharps Wolf Rock, which despite my expectations, still seemed to be good quality. Presumably Molson Coors haven’t yet given it the ‘makeover' that some more omnipresent Sharp’s beers have received - it might even still be brewed in Cornwall.
There was also a very interesting lager on keg...
Saints fans - drink Sadlers St Mary’s... |
...craft lager for Southampton fans.... for best effect - drink several pints at least an hour before kick-off...
The food was good - and as ordered - so credit to the barman, he was listening after all.
This is a typical town centre non-nonsense family eatery - but it has good real ales and Sadlers also do an interesting seasonal range...as indicated by their poster ...
Sadler seasonals...‘The Cat’s Pyjamas’ was presumably a compromise as Wychwood brewery has already done a beer called the 'Dog’s B*****ks' ... |
I was ‘discovered’ taking the photo by a couple on their way to the loo, who treated me to the ‘you’re wierd' look...
...the woman said she thought I was taking a selfie...
....in the toilet corridor?...
...it was time to move on to the next pub...
